Why do people say goldfish are too dirty to share a tank?
People always say that goldfish will put out amonia and other toxins that will kill your other fish as the reason why goldfish shouldn’t share a tank with other fish.
However, shouldn’t ammonia be zero and water quality be good in any tank, goldfish or otherwise? So I don’t see why that would even be an issue. Or do goldfish tanks constantly have high ammonia levels or something?

Goldfish are high producers of waste hence ammonia problems. Most people crowd fish and mix them…this is not idea. golds belong with golds and not tropical fish. Most tropicals are very touchy about water quality, like tetras and such.
Also golds can be great bullies. Plus there is a temperature difference. Golds prefer and do better at cooler temps, then other fish for the most part.
Yes, water should be good in any tank, but keeping golds make it that much harder and most people do not bother with partial water changes and such. it is all the factors I’ve mentioned that makes golds not a candidate for community tanks.
You are correct. The reason this is stated, aside from ignorance, is because most people keep goldfish in undersized tanks and it leaves no room for anything else. In small tanks it’s hard enough to keep things clean just with the goldfish. If the fish is kept in a suitable tank and given proper care though, the tank will be clean and this becomes a non-issue, and a clean tank is the only way to keep any fish in the world.
However, in a proper sized tank and with proper care you can certainly add other fish, the only remaining issue is the limited types of fish that are actually compatible.
You’re right, water quality is an issue in every tank, but goldfish are notorious for making theirs dirty a lot faster than other fish. Still you shouldn’t keep goldfish with other fish because of another reason…temperature.
Goldfish prefer cooler water than most other fish, some up to a 10 degree difference. If you put them in with other fish, one or the other is bound to have problems because of it. The wrong temperature can weaken the immune systems of your fish and lead to illness or death. If you want to put your goldfish with others, just do your research. If they have compatible water requirements and aren’t aggressive toward one another they should be fine in the same tank. Keep up on cleaning and there’s no reason they won’t live happily together.
Goldfish poop a lot, and are dirty, causing ammonia levels to be high. You should have tested the water and show that ammonia is 0.
well that’s the way that fish live. the ammonia should not be high or low. goldfish “poop” allot. in our tradition we always have a goldfish in a bowl for new years plus a few other things(that’s another story) and the goldfish’s bowl is full of poop in a few days!
hope i helped!
da animal freak……….
Goldfish are awesome pond fish because they’re like little fertilizer machines! I don’t think I would even try to raise them indoors. We started with a population of six and now 7 years later have a population of about 30, some are close to a foot in length. We have a good balance of plants fish aeration. Pond is about 600 gallons.
Sorry, I guess what I’m saying is that maybe it’s a size issue? Are the goldfish within the “so many inches per gallon” frame?
Goldfish are very dirty that they produce much waste.I have 2 goldfish and they are very dirty. To keep the ammonia to 0 I use ammonia tablets every water change and I clean their tank often and it dirty.
